Military families moving to a new city
While Military Service Members may be excited about their new assignment, spouses and children often dread the idea of moving. They are leaving their friends, schools and activities behind. The key to a successful move is to start planning early. families should visit the new city or town before the move. Military Service Members should research the community and find out about schools, activities and housing options. When Military Service Members and their families know what to expect, they can make a smooth transition to their new home. Here are some helpful tips for your move to a new city,
Set Up Your New Home
One of the most difficult changes can be moving to a new place. As important as making sure your family is adjusted and feeling at home in their new surroundings, one of the most crucial elements you can do for everyone involved is creating an inviting atmosphere inside the home. Letting kids pick out pictures to hang on the walls or unpack all those boxes will help establish some familiarity with what’s around while also helping ease any homesickness they might be experiencing during this process! Something as simple as making sure everyone has a comfortable place to sleep and relax can go a long way in making your new house feel like home.
Get Back into a Routine
It can be helpful to maintain some familiar traditions. If your family normally has movie nights on Fridays, try to keep that tradition alive in your new home. Not only will it provide some needed stability in your life, but it will also be a fun way to bond with your new neighbors. Who knows, you might even start a new tradition or two in your new home.
Create New Traditions
Establishing a new tradition, it can make the move a lot easier on everyone and add some excitement too! Like Sunday brunch at a little café nearby will give them an opportunity for bonding over good food while picking out fresh produce from the farmers market or taking walks in the park. It can be a fun way to start the week and get to know your new surroundings. Plus, it’s a chance to support local businesses!
Meet Neighbors & Make Friends
An easy way to meet people is by joining the Family Readiness Group (FRG). FRG is a support group for military families. They offer a variety of programs and events, such as getting together for coffee or going on field trips. They also have an online presence, so you can connect with people even if you’re not able to attend events in person. Another great way to meet people is through volunteering. There are always opportunities to volunteer, whether it’s helping out at the school or activities center. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and meet new people who share your interests.
Master Getting Around the Area
It can be hard to adjust to a new place, but there are some things that can make it easier. One thing you can do is walk or bike around your neighborhood to see what stores and other places are nearby. This way, you’ll know where to go when you need something. Another thing you can do is take a walk around the area near your home with your child. This will help them get to know their new surroundings and make it easier for them to adjust to the move. Moving to a new city doesn’t have to be difficult if you take some time to explore your new community.
Figure Out Commute Times
When you are moving to a new place, it is helpful to know how long it takes from one point A and B. This can make the journey less stressful. You can figure out what kind of vehicle will get there the fastest – car or public transportation? Once this is figured out, list every location relevant in order; grocery stores, dry cleaners, schools, parks, and your workplace. This way, you can easily map out your new commute and plan for any potential challenges.
Be a Tourist in Your New City
While it can be difficult to get used to a new place, it can also be a great opportunity to explore somewhere new. And what better way to get to know a city than like an outsider? Here are some things your family should do while they have time—and trust me when I say these ideas will be on every tourist’s list. Consider all of the things right outside your home: museums and art galleries; amusement parks; historic landmarks; zoos and aquariums. These are all great places to start exploring your new city. And don’t forget to check out the local restaurants and shops!
Focus on the Positive
Moving can lead t unfamiliar and sometimes even undesirable locations. Despite this, it is important to try to stay positive. Military service members have a duty to their country and their families to make the most of every situation. While it can be difficult to do this, there are always some good things to focus on. For example, even if the weather is terrible, there could be great food available in the area. Or, if you are moving to a city without coast guard access, it could be exciting to raise children there and learn about a new culture. Staying positive is not always easy, but it is always worth it.
However, finding a new hobby or interest can help alleviate some of this isolation. By spending time with friends on morning walks, attending summer camp, or joining trivia nights, military families can get connected to their new community and build lasting relationships. Not only will this help them feel more connected, but it will also help them adjust to the challenges of moving to a new duty station.
Stay in Touch with Old Friends
It is important to make the effort to stay connected. Military families often develop strong bonds with one another, and these relationships can be a source of support during challenging times. Additionally, staying in touch with friends and family can help service members maintain a sense of stability and normalcy during periods of transition. There are many ways to stay connected, including phone calls, text messages, social media, and video chats. It is also important to plan for regular visits, when possible.
